YLE hatches Berg’s bird toon

CARTOON FORUM: Finnish pubcaster YLE has pre-bought the first toon from a fledgling prodco set up by veteran YLE exec Pii Berg last year.
Lil’ Birdie (13×7′) is a non-verbal preschool toon which follows a little bird who doesn’t want to learn to fly and so instead hops around like a chicken and swims like a penguin.
The series is based on the books Lenna Pikkuli, Lenna by author Metsa Marja Aittokoski, who is onboard the animation project as director.
The toon is a coproduction between Pii Berg’s Pii Boutique outfit alongside Sun in Eye Production and ValoAurinko Tuotanto, both of which are also based in Finland.
Berg left YLE last year having joined the public broadcaster as a producer in 1974, eventually rising to become an acquisitions exec for children’s content.
“It’s a sweet story and it’s very exciting to try something non-verbal. I appreciate the craftsmanship,” Berg told C21.
The series does not yet have a distributor, however Berg said negotiations are currently underway to secure a seller.
Author Aittokoski added that the fact the series is non-verbal will also help the project sell internationally, while the company is also developing transmedia content.
Sun in Eye is one of six Finnish producers here in Toulouse, with five of them pitching projects, including Moskito Television’s first animated series [1] Cassie Stevens.
“Finnish animation is getting stronger and stronger all the time. The success of projects such as the feature film Niko and Angry Birds have given us confidence,” Marja Aittokoski said.
