Wuaki.tv adds 4K, plots growth

Spanish online video service Wuaki.tv is to make 4K ultra high definition (UHD) movies available to its customers in Europe next month, having recently launched in Germany.

The 4K content will initially be available in Germany and France from December 1, but the VoD service says it’s in talks to bring the catalogue to the UK, Italy and Spain.

“We expect 4K will become increasingly popular towards the end of the year and into 2015, as consumers in Europe buy new TVs around Christmas time, upgrade to Smart TVs, and 4K prices begin to drop as more devices come to the market,” said Jordi Miró, chief technology officer of Wuaki.tv.

The company, which was acquired by Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten in 2012, also says it plans to launch in a further 11 countries by the end of next year.
