WorkShop preps Hollywood scandal series

US indie producer The WorkShop is working on an eight-part factual series about the ongoing Hollywood sex scandal.

Shame: The Story of Sexual Harassment in Hollywood will go into production later this month, following a deluge of allegations against prominent entertainment figures that began with a New York Times exposé of Harvey Weinstein.

The series will examine a multitude of issues, starting with the ‘casting couch mentality’ that dates back to the days of silent films. Viewers will see how actors, directors and producers have used their power as permission to engage in unsolicited, abusive behaviour for decades, according to the producers.

The WorkShop CEO and exec producer Tom Farrell said: “The time is now for a show like this. During the last few months, in particular, a flood of allegations has exposed a culture in which some of Hollywood’s most prominent personalities abused their power and harassed and/or allegedly assaulted dozens of innocent victims.”

Through interviews with journalists, celebrities, victims, mental health experts and industry insiders, the series will ask how this could have gone unchecked for so long, who are the brave people coming forwards and what it’s like to go from revered to reviled overnight. It will also explore the knock-on effects, such as job losses when programmes are pulled.

The Weinstein allegations have been followed by the resignation of Amazon’s Roy Price, HBO and FX severing ties with comedian Louis CK, the BBC pulling forthcoming projects involving actor Ed Westwick, and Kevin Spacey being ousted from House of Cards by Netflix.
