Windfall acquired by Argonon

UK indie production group Argonon has acquired specialist factual outfit Windfall Films as it looks to expand its presence in the US.

The acquisition is Argonon’s biggest deal since its launch in May 2011 and will enable the company to boost its profile in North America, where Windfall is known for its multi-platform programming.

Windfall has worked with broadcast partners in the US and Canada, as well as the UK, and it produces shows on history, military, adventure, science and natural history topics. Its slate includes The Murder Trial for Channel 4 in the UK; Big Bigger Biggest, which was produced for National Geographic; and Strip the City for Discovery Channel.

Financial details have not been released but David Dugan, CEO and co-founder of Windfall, will join the board of Argonon and take a stake in the firm, along with fellow directors Ian Duncan, Carlo Massarella and Krisina Obradovic.

James Burstall, CEO of Argonon, said Windfall was “an innovative, talented and maverick team of producers,” adding that the firm’s “edgy yet populist cross-platform programming and extensive client base perfectly complements our existing businesses and extends the group’s range of programming into new genres.”

Burstall said the deal would help Argonon to achieve its goal of reaching a group turnover of £100m by 2016. Windfall will continue to operate from its London base but will gain access to Argonon’s infrastructure, including its business and production resources.

Windfall is the latest acquisition for Argonon, which already owns factual entertainment producer Leopard Films, entertainment producer Remedy Productions and factual producer Transparent Television. The firm has also set up joint ventures with documentary-focused BriteSpark Films of London, Vancouver-based Remedy Canada and multi-platform drama company Blacklisted Films.
