Weinstein Co fires president

The president of US film and TV producer The Weinstein Company (TWC) has been sacked following allegations that he protected disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.

David Glasser

David Glasser stepped up from his role as chief operating officer to run TWC along with Robert Weinstein, Harvey’s younger brother, last year at the height of the scandal surrounding the company.

He has now been fired from the company after the board of TWC unanimously voted him out for failing to act on employee harassment complaints. “The board of The Weinstein Company has unanimously voted to terminate David Glasser for cause,” a TWC statement said.

The move comes after New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman announced he would be suing TWC and Harvey Weinstein following an investigation that uncovered a “pervasive pattern of sexual harassment, intimidation, discrimination and abuse” at TWC.

This jeopardised a potential sale of the company after Schneiderman said any sale should be used to compensate victims and said neither “perpetrators nor enablers” must profit.

Harvey Weinstein is accused of sexual misconduct, including rape, by more than 80 women and was sacked from the company in October last year. Weinstein, who founded TWC with his brother Robert in 2005, has denied any allegation of non-consensual sex.

The scandal surround TWC brought about the #metoo campaign on social media and has also sparked a wave of sexual misconduct accusations levelled at figures including Kevin Spacey, Ed Westwick, Louis CK, Roy Price and John Lassiter.

More than 300 actresses, writers and directors have also given their backing to an initiative to help fight sexual harassment in Hollywood and other workplaces in the wake of the scandal.
