Gillian Zhao takes the newly created role of exec VP and MD for Warner Bros China and will have general oversight of all the company’s businesses in the country, including television distribution and home entertainment.

Her remit extends to consumer products, games and emerging distribution technologies and she will work closely with executives to expand the firm’s operations in the country. Zhao reports to Richard Fox, Warner Bros exec VP of international.

Prior to joining Warner Bros, Zhao most recently served as senior assistant to the president of Wanda Culture Group and CEO of Wanda Pictures, and before that worked at Bona Film Group, Celestial Entertainment China and Star TV.

The hire continues Warner Bros’ staff rejig in the Far East following the appointment of Masami Takahashi as president of its Japanese operations in July.

“As we look to expand all of our businesses in China, Gillian’s know-how, experience and contacts will give us a competitive advantage,” said Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO at Warner Bros.

Fox added that Zhao’s appointment would “bring a more market-oriented and localised approach,” while Zhao said the company had “unlimited potential and opportunity in this high-growth market.”
