Video sharing site Vimeo has acquired a streaming start-up that it will use to allow firms and content creators to launch their own SVoD services.

Vimeo has picked up VHX for an undisclosed sum and is preparing to launch white-label services that will enable customers to air their own content online.

VHX was founded in 2010 and allows consumers to sell shows online and via apps, with Vimeo now looking to provide cheaper OTT solutions to studios and agencies, as well as broadcasters.

“Online video is expanding from a few mainstream subscription services into a flourishing world of interest-based streaming channels, much like the evolution from broadcast to cable television,” said Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor.

Jamie Wilkinson, VHX co-founder and CEO, said the deal means “we’ll be able to move faster and help creators large and small succeed in the over-the-top streaming market.”

Last year Vimeo became the latest online player to move into original content after announcing a slate of three new commissions. Vimeo had previously been based on helping independent creators sell their content directly, while occasionally licensing originals on an exclusive basis.
