Vice expands in Asia Pacific

Youth-skewing media firm Vice is expanding in Asia Pacific with the launch of a production hub in Singapore alongside new offices in Mumbai and Delhi.

The US company’s global general manager, Hosi Simon, will relocate from New York to Singapore to become CEO of Vice Asia Pacific as part of the expansion.

Vice’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore will include a studio for local documentary, scripted and film content production, which is due to be fully operational by January 2018.

Meanwhile, as previously announced, Vice India will launch in early 2018 through a partnership with Times of India Group, allowing Vice to produce and distribute local programming for online, mobile and linear platforms.

The new offices in Mumbai and Delhi will include a studio producing scripted, film, news and culture content from India for television, SVoD, OTT and digital platforms.

They join Vice’s existing international offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Jakarta.

“We believe there is a huge opportunity for Vice to build out a deeply relevant, highly local youth media company across the Asia-Pacific region,” said Simon.

“With the growing importance of local culture to young people, along with a surging youth population and increased connectivity, some of the most dominant forms of global youth culture across technology, music, fashion, consumer brands, food and identity will come from this part of the world.”

Elsewhere, Vice has expanded its partnership with Japanese telecoms firm Docomo to bring Vice’s SVoD service into Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand.

In Indonesia, broadcaster Jawa Pos TV will begin airing Viceland-branded programming blocks and episodes of Vice News Tonight, as well as digital content in primetime slots, from this month.

The expansion in the region follows the series of deals Vice announced earlier this year to bring its original programming to mobile platforms around the world.
