Vermilion, Rubicon visit French Quarter

Producer and financier Vermilion Entertainment has partnered with fellow US firm Rubicon Entertainment to adapt novel The French Quarter for TV.

The 1936 book was written by Herbert Asbury (Gangs of New York) and takes an informal look at the history of New Orleans’ underworld.

Vermilion and Rubicon will be executive producers on the project with discussions over potential directors, writers and cast now underway. Details of broadcasters are yet to be revealed.

Todd Thompson, president of Vermilion, said the novel “showcases an incredible time in history, spanning pirates and riverboat gambling, to voodoo and politics.”

Rubicon partner Nathan Grubbs added: “The French Quarter has been a passion project of mine for many years,” describing the novel as “an incredibly unique story that is the birth of New Orleans.”

Vermilion was formed earlier this year by the founders of US movie studio Cross Creek Pictures. It is working with Universal Cable Productions and Chris Columbus’ 1492 Productions to develop an anthology series inspired by the work of horror movie director Alfred Hitchcock.

Rubicon’s projects, meanwhile, include an adaptation of Stephen King’s short story Drunken Fireworks, which is being written by Matt Rager (The Sound & The Fury).
