USA measures up Suits spin-off

The Suits spin-off will focus on Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres, left)

USA Network is looking to create a spin-off from long-running legal drama Suits, with the original show’s creator and studio Universal Cable Productions (UCP) on board.

The NBCUniversal (NBCU)-owned broadcaster and studio are working on an untitled pilot for the spin-off series that will become the final episode of the seventh season of Suits.

The episode, which will air in the first quarter of 2018, will centre on powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) as she reunites with her former colleagues in Chicago.

The pilot will be written by Suits creator Aaron Korsh and Daniel Arkin, who exec produced the original series and will hold similar roles on the spin-off. Anton Cropper (House of Lies, Suits) is attached to direct.

Doug Liman, David Bartis and Gene Klein of Hypnotic Films & Television, which is behind Suits, will also serve as executive producers.

Jeff Wachtel, chief content officer at NBCU Cable Entertainment, and president of UCP, said: “Gina and Aaron have created a truly memorable character in Jessica Pearson, and we felt we owed it to the audience – and ourselves – to follow her journey beyond the original show.”

The US legal drama has been running on USA for almost seven years and is sold as a format, with South Korean production firm EnterMedia Pictures picking up rights for a local version in 2015.
