Both companies are subsidiaries of Liberty Global, owned by US cable TV magnate John Malone.

Under the rebrand, all UPC operations, products and services will move to the Virgin brand in the coming months.

Magnus Ternsjö, CEO of UPC Ireland, said: “Introducing the Virgin Media brand to Ireland is a big investment in our business and our future.

“In almost every corner of the world, the Virgin brand is famous for its entrepreneurial spirit in delivering more for customers, which is exactly what we’re going to do, by building even further on all our innovation and achievements to date.”

Liberty Global bought Virgin Media UK in 2013 for £15bn (US$23bn). Last month, UPC revealed it was acquiring Irish commercial broadcaster TV3 in an €80m (US$96m) deal.

The latest deal is subject to regulatory approval from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and a separate media plurality test by the Irish government.
