Universal Kids picks preschool pair

Universal Kids, the US network that will replace preschool channel Sprout later this year, has greenlit two animated series for younger viewers.

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment announced in May that the channel would be rebranded as Universal Kids on September 9, with Sprout remaining in the form of a 15-hour preschool programming block.

The channel has now given the go-ahead to Powerbirds (52×11′) and Norm (52×11′), which will roll out in the preschool block in early and late 2019 respectively.

Powerbirds was created by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Steve Breen and is about two pet parakeets who moonlight as superheroes.

Norm, meanwhile, follows the character of Mother Nature’s Son, who is a forest handyman and fixes the problems of its highly eccentric animal population. The comedy show will feature stop-motion animation.

“As Sprout grows into Universal Kids, our mission is to reflect all that is universal about being a kid. For our youngest viewers, that means helping them grow into good people,” said Amy Friedman, senior VP of programming and development at Universal Kids.
