UKTV hires for scripted push

Multichannel operator UKTV has hired Simon Lupton, a former comedy commissioning editor at the BBC, to build up its scripted entertainment output.

Lupton will work on UKTV’s scripted entertainment slate across its portfolio of 10 TV channels in his new role as commissioning editor, reporting to the newly promoted director of commissioning, Richard Watsham.

Scripted series recently commissioned by UKTV, which is owned by BBC Worldwide and Scripps Networks Interactive, include Crackanory; You, Me & Them; and Red Dwarf X.

Lupton has over 15 years’ experience in comedy and entertainment production and worked as commissioning editor for the BBC for three years, working across all four of the broadcaster’s channels and online. Following this, he undertook a similar role at Comedy Central.

Lupton said: “There are some very interesting programmes in development and pre-production right now, from scripted comedy for Dave through to Tony Jordan’s drama for Watch, Legion.”

In related news, UKTV-operated entertainment channel Watch has commissioned Singing in the Rainforest (5×60′), which will see famous musicians live with remote tribes from around the world and collaborate on music together.

Created and produced by Gogglebox Entertainment, the series will air on Watch in late 2014 or early 2015. Talent will be confirmed in the coming weeks, UKTV added.
