TWC sale hits Netflix pact

Netflix’s plans to launch its subscription VoD service on Time Warner Cable (TWC) set-top boxes have been reportedly stalled by the cable operator’s impending sale to Comcast.

A launch is unlikely to happen before TWC is acquired by Comcast Corp for US$45.2bn, according to a Bloomberg report.

US-based Netflix is also said to be in talks with Comcast, but those are not thought to have progressed as far as its negotiations with TWC.

Netflix, which has 44.4 million subscribers worldwide, is reportedly pitching its programming to a variety of pay TV providers and a deal with TWC would put pressure on other pay providers to offer Netflix as well.

The Californian firm has already signed deals in Europe with Liberty Global’s Virgin Media and Swedish pay TV operator Com Hem, and is trying to reach agreements with smaller US outfits that use TiVo set-top boxes.

Last week, C21 reported that the TWC/Comcast deal could be further threatened by expected scrutiny from US antitrust regulators, which could block the proposal in response to criticism from consumer groups.
