London-based distributor TVF International has secured global rights to a two-part original commission from History Channel Asia commemorating China’s part in the Second World War.

WWII: China’s Forgotten War (2×48’) is fronted by Rana Mitter and has been commissioned to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the conflict.

The programme documents the struggle between China and Japan, which became the longest conflict in the war and cost more than 14 million Chinese lives.

Infocus Asia and China International Communication Centre coproduced the project to bring attention to a part of the war that is often forgotten in the West.

Eyewitness accounts from the last remaining survivors and rare archive footage are combined with animated reconstructions to bring the story back to life.

Julian Chou-Lambert, TVF International’s China specialist, who acquired the programme, said: “This landmark documentary not only provides a fitting reminder of China’s extraordinary contribution to World War Two, it also gives vital context to modern day geopolitics in the wider Asia-Pacific region.

“At a time when the world is watching the rise of China, the film provides new and unique insight into the lasting legacy of this conflict, and may help to promote greater understanding between China and other countries around the world.”
