Time Warner eyes Hulu stake

Time Warner is in talks to acquire a stake in Hulu in a deal that would value the US VoD service at over US$5bn.

Hulu is hoping that any capital raised would help it to compete with Netflix and Amazon down the line, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The potential investment would make Time Warner an equal stakeholder in Hulu along with existing owners Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast.

The addition of Time Warner, whose company HBO already has its own streaming service, HBO Now, would mean the current owners would lessen their stakes to 25% apiece, according to the report.

The trio of current owners are committed to investing US$750m after they stopped looking for a buyer for the service in 2013. A buyer for Hulu had also previously been sought in 2011.

This week, Hulu announced it is working with US studio Lionsgate and Twilight writer Stephenie Meyer to develop a supernatural-themed series.
