Lingo Pictures will produce Upright (8×60’), which will star Aussie musician, comedian, actor and writer Minchin (Matilda the Musical), with Matt Saville (Please Like Me) directing.

The screenplay is by the creator Chris Taylor (The Chaser), Minchin, Leon Ford (Offspring, No Activity) and actor Kate Mulvany.

Minchin will play Lucky Flynn, a gifted pianist with a self-destructive streak who sets off in a hire car from Sydney, taking his cherished but battered piano. When he quite literally runs into feisty teenager Meg (Milly Alcock), his emotional state is put to the test.

Shooting will start in Western Australia and South Australia in October, produced by Lingo Pictures’ Jason Stephens, Taylor and Melissa Kelly.

The series is funded by Foxtel and Screen Australia in association with state agencies South Australian Film Corporation, Create NSW and Screenwest. Sales to the rest of the world will be handled by Entertainment One.

Lingo Pictures is currently producing miniseries Lambs of God for Foxtel, starring Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Game of Thrones), Sam Reid and Jessica Barden.
