The Good Doctor calls on Wowow

ABC’s The Good Doctor is a remake of a South Korean drama

Japanese pay TV broadcaster Wowow has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to US drama The Good Doctor from Sony Pictures Television.

The medical drama, which currently airs on ABC in the US and is based on the South Korean series of the same name, will premiere in Japan on Wowow in April 2018.

The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios, in association with production companies Shore Z Productions, 3AD and Entermedia. It has been developed by David Shore, who also serves as showrunner, while Daniel Dae Kim is an executive producer.

It stars Freddie Highmore as Shaun Murphy, a young autistic surgeon who has savant syndrome and relocates from a quiet country life to join the surgical unit at a prestigious hospital.

ABC picked up the series for a full season of 18 episodes in October.

It is the latest show from a Hollywood studio acquired by Wowow, which signed a multi-title content licensing agreement with CBS Studios International that included the reboot of David Lynch drama Twin Peaks.
