Telemundo to shop HBO content

MIPCOM: Telemundo Internacional has agreed to become the exclusive distributor of HBO Latin America Originals in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Oceania from January.

marcos_santanaThe distribution arm of US broadcaster Telemundo will represent fiction and documentary series from HBO Latin America, starting with El Hipnotizador, Magnífica 70, El Negocio and Psi.

These shows have previously been available only on the HBO channel.

Other titles included in the distribution deal are Capadocia, Epitafios and Prófugos. All shows have been produced over more than 10 years under the label HBO Latin America Originals.

The move follows deals between the two companies that in June last year gave HBO Latin America distribution rights to the Telemundo Internacional channel throughout most of Latin America and this July gave it rights to the NBCUniversal International channels in Spanish-speaking Lat Am.

“Our goal has always been to expand through the sale of the very highest quality products and through unique formats inspired by real life. This agreement validates that effort,” said Marcos Santana, president of Telemundo Internacional.

“This agreement represents another step in our collaboration,” added Emilio Rubio, CEO of HBO Latin America. “Our products perfectly complement each other, and we are convinced that Telemundo Internacional is an ideal partner to represent our catalogue.”

In related news, the distributor has signed an agreement, described as “long-term,” with Mega Chile for the broadcaster’s fiction productions.

Telemundo Internacional’s now holds international distribution rights to all of Mega’s fiction programming, totalling around 450 hours of content per year, and formats outside of Chile.

Mega CEO Patricio Hernández described the agreement as “a giant leap for Mega in the company’s goal to internationalize its content and presence in the world” in Cannes today.
