Telemundo names new programmer

Telemundo Media in the US has hired Jesus Torres Viera as its new executive VP of programming and content – putting him atop the overall programming and scheduling efforts for the Hispanic network and its off-shoots.

The company has also appointed Daniel Cubillo to the new position of VP of non-scripted content development. Both will be based in Miami. Torres Viera will report to Telemundo president Emilio Romano, while Cubillo will report to Torres Viera.

Their appointments follow news earlier this week that parent NBCUniversal had tapped former Univision boss Joe Uva to oversee Telemundo. Romano will report to Uva starting April 3.

Torres Viera joins from JTV Media and Ploptv, where he worked on properties including the late-night Venezuelan show Erika Tipo 11, Telemundo said yesterday. Prior to that, he held multiple senior posts at Sony Entertainment Television through the late 1990s and 2000s.

“Jesus and Daniel have extensive production experience and proven track records in content development,” said Romano.

Torres Viera will oversee programme planning and development, as well as promotional scheduling.

Cubillo will be responsible for variety and non-scripted programming, both key genres for Telemundo’s conventional network and its youth-aimed specialty channel Mun2.

He will oversee the greenlighting of all such projects and be producers’ main contact within the company. He was previously content manager and creative director at Univision Studios.
