SVT names CEO as Hamilton exits

Swedish broadcaster SVT has brought in a former journalist and editor from national newspaper group UNT as its replacement for outgoing CEO Eva Hamilton.

Hanna Stjärne will take up the role early next year and will replace Hamilton, who had been in the position since 2006.

Stjärne was most recently editor in chief at publishing group UNT and before that worked as programme director for Swedish public radio station P1. She joined UNT as president and editor-in-chief in 2011, and will sit on SVT’s board in her new role.

Stjärne said that her “vast experience in software development, a strong digital background and a deep knowledge of the media landscape changes both within public service and on the commercial side” would help her navigate SVT through “transformative” times.

SVT chairwoman Anna-Karin Celsing said Stjärne’s exposure to different media would “be beneficial for SVT in the changes that the media industry is expected to undergo in the coming years.”

Hamilton, whose next move is not yet known, recently hit out at Swedish government plans to cut the number of TV channels available in the country to make room for telecoms services.
