Sundance rises again in London

Sundance will hold two more documentary festivals in London in 2013 and 2014, after holding its first outside the US in the city earlier this year.

The second Sundance London will be at the O2 Arena from April 25 to 28 next year, before returning in 2014.

Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford today said: “The vibrant arts community in London has informed this decision as much as anything. Seeing what comes of nurturing a broader global community for new voices and varied perspectives in American independent film and music, seems a worthy 21st century endeavour.”

The event will feature the international and UK premieres of American independent films and will follow the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, which is held in the US in January.

The first London edition, held in April, featured screenings of 27 films, including many European premieres, and performances by 17 musical acts, as well as a keynote from Redford himself. In this, the US actor criticised the UK and US governments’ attitude to the arts and independent films.

John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival, said: “We will continue connecting with the UK and European filmmaking community through workshops, panels and conversations designed to create a forum for identifying commonalities of independent filmmaking as well as an exchange of best practices and new ideas.”
