Stewart joined the social media firm as head of media partnerships for Canada in 2013 and was promoted to a role that also covered the US in 2014.

Her departure, which was first reported by tech website Re/code, is the latest high-profile exit from Twitter’s media department in the past year.

Others to have left recently include Joanne Park, head of cable TV partnerships, who subsequently joined E! Entertainment, and Nathan Hubbard, interim head of media, who was replaced by Ali Jafari.

During her time at Twitter, Stewart oversaw the integration of video apps such as Periscope, Vine and live editing suite SnappyTV into the service.

The company recently partnered with CBS News to live stream the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in the US.

Prior to joining Twitter Stewart was exec VP for English services at the Canadian public broadcaster, having previously held roles at Alliance Atlantis and Hallmark Channel.
