US cablenet Spike has greenlit a karaoke-themed gameshow to join Lip Sync Battle in its schedule and has recruited The Office star Craig Robinson to host it.

Caraoke Showdown (10×30′) is described as Cash Cab meets karaoke and sees Robinson pick up unsuspecting contestants who must belt out their favourite tunes, finish the lyrics or act out songs for cash.

The series will be executive produced by Robinson alongside Howie Mandel, Alice Dickens-Koblin, Peter Herschko and Brian Veskosky, while Core Media Group will produce.

It is due to be filmed in LA and New York this summer and will debut on Lip Sync Battle network Spike in 2017.

Robinson appeared in 120 episodes of the US version of The Office and currently stars in the second season of USA Network’s Mr Robot.

He has also featured in the films Pineapple Express, Hot Tub Machine, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, This is the End and Peeples.

Caraoke Showdown marks the second gameshow Spike has greenlit in 2016 after That Awkward Game Show, which will be hosted by Jeff Dye and goes into production this summer for a fall premiere.

It comes at the same time as reports in the US claim that Apple Music will exclusively stream another car-themed karaoke format, James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke.
