Sony paints AXN Black

Hit drama series Boardwalk Empire and Misfits will be broadcast in Iberia by a new channel from Sony Pictures Television (SPT).

AXN Black – the latest extension of the company’s male-skewing action-entertainment net AXN – went live in Portugal today, with Spain expected to follow.

The channel offers dramas from Australia, Canada, the US, the UK, Germany, France and Denmark, which will also include The Killing, Criminal Justice and Wallander. These will be accompanied by a movie slot every night of the week.

SPT has operated channels in Iberia for more than 10 years, starting with AXN – currently the number one pay channel in Spain and number two in Portugal – and then SET.

In Portugal, AXN Black will be available on the Meo, Zon, Cabovisão, AR Telecom, Vodafone Casa TV and Optimus Clix platforms, while in Spain discussions are believed to be underway with Digital+, Imagenio, R and Euskaltel. Viewers will also receive the Portuguese feed on ZAP in Angola.

AXN was picked up in January by South Korean broadcaster CU Media in a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) Networks Asia, and ONE, SPE’s first Asian general entertainment channel, has now gone live in Cambodia in a deal with Phnom Penh Cable Television (PPCTV).

Launched on May 1, ONE joins Sony stablemates AXN, AXN Beyond, Animax and Sony Entertainment Television on PPCTV.

It will offer viewers in Cambodia some of the latest Korean drama, variety and music programmes, with shows expected to air up to five weeks after their debuts in South Korea. It also has exclusive access to shows produced by South Korea’s SBS.
