Sony Pictures Animation is working with broadcaster Corus Entertainment’s prodco in Canada to produce a TV series spun off from its blockbuster feature film Hotel Transylvania.

Hotel Transylvania

Record breaking movie Hotel Transylvania

Corus Entertainment-owned prodco Nelvana and Sony are developing a series based on the property, which premiered in the fall of 2012 and set a record as the highest-grossing September opening ever at the US box office.

Focusing on the teenage years of Dracula’s daughter and her friends, the animated comedy will be developed and produced by Nelvana Studio in Toronto and is slated to launch in early 2017.

The feature film was set in Dracula’s lavish resort, where there are no humans to bother monsters and their families. A sequel is due to be released in North America on September 25.

Sony Pictures Television Distribution will handle sales of the Hotel Transylvania TV series in the US, while Nelvana Enterprises will distribute it abroad.

Sony Pictures Animation holds global licenses for toys, games and publishing. Executive producing the series are Rick Mischel of Sony Pictures Animation and Colin Bohm and Irene Weibel at Nelvana.

Nelvana content airs on Corus Entertainment’s kids’ channels in Canada and in more than 160 other countries.
