Sonar, Ecosse to adapt Quatermain

MIPTV: Sonar Entertainment (fka RHI Entertainment) in the US and UK indie Ecosse Films have joined forces to produce an action-adventure drama based on the Allan Quatermain books.

Both Quartermain (10×60′) and the companies’ partnership were unveiled at MipTV by Sonar’s new CEO Stewart Till and Ecosse Films’ founder and MD Douglas Rae.

The move comes hot on the heels of Sonar’s rebrand from RHI, revealed this week, and Till’s announcement that he will expand the firm’s activities to cover series as well as RHI’s traditional TV movies and miniseries.

The new series is adapted from the adventure books by Victorian author H Rider Haggard, which were said to have inspired the Indiana Jones movie franchise. The story follows the lead character, a rugged expedition leader based in Durban, as he helps search for the missing brother of a wealthy German nobleman. Rae will executive produce the series, which will be written by Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle (Going Postal).

The new production will “introduce Quatermain to a new generation and bring his timeless exploits into the 21st Century,” said Till, while Rae added that it will have “huge potential for an international audience.”

Ecosse’s film and TV pedigree includes the recent US$50m international drama Camelot for Starz Channel and Channel 4, and UK dramas Monarch of the Glen and Mistresses for BBC1. It was also behind high-profile movies such as Mrs Brown, Charlotte Gray, The Water Horse and John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy.
