Sky rolls out Roku box in Germany

European broadcaster Sky has rolled out its streaming box developed with US-based Roku to enable German subscribers to use its OTT services.

The device provides access to the satcaster’s Sky Online OTT service and its subscription VoD platform Sky Snap via existing television sets.

Subscribers can also watch shows through Roku’s Channel Store and use third-party apps from companies including Vimeo, Wall Street Journal and iFood.tv.

Steve Shannon, Roku’s general manager of content and services, said the firm would also be developing more content with Sky for the device.

In related news, Sky has picked up rights to UEFA Europa League football games for its German service until 2018. The German arm of the broadcaster already airs matches from the UEFA Champions League and its latest agreement includes internet and mobile TV rights.

UK satcaster BSkyB completed its takeover of Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia in November in a deal valued at around £7bn (US$10.9bn), renaming the enlarged broadcaster simply as Sky.
