Happyish failed to pull in viewers for Showtime

US cable network Showtime has pulled the plug on comedy series Happyish after just one season.

Happyish, which was created, written and exec produced by Shalom Auslander (This American Life), was ordered in January last year but was put on hold following lead actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death.

Steve Coogan, star of BBC sitcom I’m Alan Partridge, stepped in to take up the lead on the show, which was exec produced by Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You, A Walk in the Woods) and Alexandra Beattie under their In Cahoots banner.

However, Happyish was cancelled after launching in April to just 430,000 total viewers and mixed reviews. It also failed to garner any Emmy nominations.

The programme followed the life of a 44-year-old, played by Coogan, who is faced with a crisis after a much younger man is appointed as his boss. The series is sold globally by CBS Studios International.
