A 'must-have' reference book for anyone in the business of buying, selling or producing formats on the international market. Trading TV Formats is published by Eurovision TV, part of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
This exclusive reference book has been written by former managing director of the Format Recognition & Protection Association (Frapa), Christoph Fey, and outlines important legal guidelines for working in the €2.4bn global format business.

There is little doubt that new original formats are pulling in huge audiences worldwide. Examples of success stories include Strictly Come Dancing, with exceptional ratings on the BBC, the American version Dancing with the Stars on ABC, which drew in 22 million viewers for the season one finale, and Dancing with the Stars, the highest rated show in Australia in 2005.

However, the concept of formats is still fairly recent, so rules and regulations about protecting and successfully licensing the valuable intellectual property within TV programmes have not yet been clearly defined.

The format business still involves either scanning markets in search of hot new formats or licensing existing formats in international markets. The EBU's Trading TV Formats book offers guidance about intellectual property rights for broadcasters seeking to acquire formats as well as for those developing new programmes.

Trading TV Formats will provide legal guidelines for questions about:
  • How to prevent illegal copying of formats
  • How to protect your programmes from unsubstantiated ownership claims
  • How to avoid pitfalls with option and license agreements of new format options on international acquisition tours
  • How to maintain control of a successful licensee programme
  • How to resolve conflicts with production companies, format distributors, licensees, or creators.
"This book of guidelines will help broadcasters to manage formats with confidence," says Bettina Brinkmann, head of formats at Eurovision TV and editor of the book. Bjørn Erichsen, director of Eurovision TV, adds: “We are confident that this publication will be indispensable to the format trading business."

Trading TV Formats is the only route-map through the legal minefield of the format business on the international market.
For non-EBU members, this book is only available via C21 Media, now for the SPECIAL 2009 DISCOUNT PRICE of £100.
