Canadian media giant Shaw Communications has promoted industry veteran Barbara Williams to executive VP of broadcasting and president of channels operator Shaw Media.

Williams has been tasked with strengthening the core Shaw business, while modernising to meet the needs of the fast-developing sector.

She will oversee the 19 speciality channels owned by Shaw Communications’ subsidiaries Global Television and Shaw Media.

Williams, who has 25 years of experience in the TV business, was previously senior VP for content at Shaw Media, in charge of creating Canadian original productions and acquiring US and international series as well as scheduling for the company’s channels.

Prior to that Williams was executive VP for content at Canadian channels operator Canwest Broadcasting, VP and general manager of local station Toronto 1, and senior VP of lifestyle programming at US distributor Alliance Atlantis.

Williams is currently chair of the Banff World Media Festival and a director of the Board of the Canadian Film Centre as well as Canada’s Walk of Fame.

She has been behind numerous successful Canadian television series commissioned by Shaw Media, including Rookie Blue, Vikings, Lost Girl, Remedy, Top Chef Canada, Continuum, Yukon Gold and Timber Kings.
