Barely Legal Drivers

6 x 60mins

In every episode of this brand new format, we’ll give the parents of two new drivers from the same area (be it urban or rural) the chance to see what their offspring are like behind the wheel.

Why? Well, getting your first car is one of life’s great rites of passage – it’s right up there with leaving home, losing your cherry, and getting married. It‘s a key to life as a grown up.

Because the car is so much more than just a way of getting from A to B…it gives you your first true taste of independence and autonomy. It marks a gearshift from teenager to adult. And it’s the perfect way to escape the gaze of mum and dad!

But a car plus a teenager equals terror for most parents as they ask themselves: “Are they really ready” Are they man or woman enough to take half a tonne of metal out onto the roads? Will they treat the car - with all the responsibility it entails - properly? Or does getting a motor play to the most immature parts of their personality, turning them into madcap motorists who drive like morons and use the car as mobile bar/party palace? Is getting a car the first step on the road to growing up or a literal vehicle for temptation and bad behaviour?

In a deliciously twisted new coming of age format, we’re about to find out; our parents are giving their kids the keys to their cars and letting them loose on Britain’s highways. The catch? Their mums and dads will be watching their every manoeuvre via cameras in the car. And as they do, they – and we – will get a window into the world of these teens, not just when they’re driving but while they work, rest and play!

The teens will be told they’re being filmed overtly and covertly for a coming of age doc. They’ll have no idea it’s REALLY all about their driving – and it’ll be their mum and dad, assisted by a traffic cop, who watch the footage and decide their fate!

Will the teens be model drivers while they’re being watched – or will the freedom of four wheels combined with inevitable inexperience be too much? We’re giving the parents two possible gifts to pass on to their offspring - a car or a course of extra driving lessons – but it’s up to them what their kid gets. Fasten your seat belts, because these parents are about to get a crash course in life as a British teenager…
