The Paper

12 x 50'

When Mario Kardum, an influential and politically conservative building contractor from a powerful family buys The Paper, he has two underlying, questionable motives. Firstly he wants to keep the news of his mother's investigation as a hit and run perpetrator out of the news and secondly he wants to coerce the left-wing paper into writing favorably about the conservative presidential candidate he is backing.

A look inside this charged workplace reveals that Kardum is not the only person with questionable morals, potentially damaging secrets, misguided loyalties and selfish motivations. While some members of the management and reporters lower down the food chain fight to maintain The Paper's editorial integrity, others are overwhelmed by their connections to Kardum and his portfolio or corrupt organizations. Whatever side of the fence they fall on, all of them have their own personal demons to fight and their own agendas to meet, which deeply effect their moral compass.

As the country moves towards the election we discover the alliances, the betrayals and the blackmail between these connected members of the press, the police force, the government and Mario Karum's inner circle.

The Paper spotlights a universal topic of fascination in every society, the relationship between the media, the government and law enforcement as well as powerful families and corporations. A vortex of political corruption, power struggles, private weaknesses, crime, selfishness and betrayed expectations all swallow up and eat away at The Paper and journalism itself, a profession once so important, but today rendered nothing more than a dull instrument to achieve other, greater interests.

This transitional vortex also engulfs the hard-hitting drama's main characters as well as the very motives which drive them to resist, as well they can, the degradation of their profession. It highlights the obstacles, setbacks, and dilemmas they encounter while treading this slippery and winding path, one brimming with betrayal, compromise and loss of integrity under pressure of vanity, fear for one's livelihood, and dark secrets lurking from the past.
