Granite Flats

Spring, 1962. The cold war is warming up. As much as America wants to move toward President Kennedy’s “new frontier,” fear and paranoia are buried deep in the cultural consciousness. A 12-year-old boy’s Air Force pilot father dies when his plane explodes over the Pacific, a casualty of the cold war. The boy’s mother, a military nurse, relocates them from California to Granite Flats, Colorado, a small, quirky community with an adjacent Army base and VA hospital. She hopes to start fresh and escape the tumultuous forces of the cold war.

Then something falls out of the sky. Is it aliens, as some of the more eccentric residents believe? Is it a comet, as the boy and his newfound friends think? Or has something more dangerous, more real, been brought down to earth in Granite Flats? The boy makes two fast friends, a brilliant girl with a scientific mind and an outgoing comic-book fan whose father is the Chief of Police. The three friends, the police, and some mysterious arrivals, all investigate the object and its impact on the town. The lives of many seemingly disconnected people begin to be drawn together in a web of intrigue operating on levels large and small. And they all learn that in 1962, you can’t escape the cold war.
