The National Spelling Competition starts with seven talented youngsters each representing a different city from around the country. Their first challenge begins at the top of a stair case. They each have 60 seconds to spell as many words as they can. For each correctly spelled word, they take a step down. The four closest to the bottom of the stairs at the end of a minute carry on to the next round.
Round two consists of three parts. The four contestants are presented with their own touch screen which they must write down the answers. In the first game, they have to correctly write down 3 words that are given to them. The second game consists of two sentences which both contain one misspelled word. It’s their job to find the misspelled word and rewrite it correctly. In the last game, ten words appear on the screens and the four contestants must indicate which words are misspelled. The two who scored the most points in the first and second round qualify to move onto the finale.
In the final round, the two contestants take turns spelling words that are called to them. The first to spell three words correctly wins the competition and one of the most hotly contested academic titles of the country…National Spelling Champion.
