US hungry for international remakes

C21 TALKING SHOP: Fresh from winning a Golden Clobe, C21 caught up with Chip Johannessen, co-executive producer of Homeland and veteran of Dexter and 24, during his recent trip to London.

In this episode he discusses the growing appetite in the US to remake international properties.
Johannessen says: “There have been a lot of remakes over the last 10 years. Some of them you realise are just doomed as they’re being transported. Cracker was a good example. It was such a fantastic British series and you just knew it was going to be horrible. It was nice they tried but everything that made Cracker wonderful could not be done as an American broadcast product.”

In this episode, Johannessen also talks about the Golden Globes success of Homeland, the opportunity for US coproductions and the battle for viewers between cable and broadcast networks.
