TALKING SHOP: European documentary veteran Andrew Solomon is a year into his rebuilding job at Austrian pubcaster ORF's natural history unit Universum. He spoke to Talking Shop about the challenges he has faced so far.

A year ago Walter Koehler left his position at the head of UNiversum and took all 13 of his team with him to form Red Bull Media House-backed Terra Mater Factual Studios. Andrew Solomon, previously with Canal+, Docstar and NDR in Germany, was the man chosen to pick up the pieces.

He said: "We're running very smoothly now and planning well in advance. We have our slate of own productions prepared for 2012 and some of them into 2013.

"Our first 3D production, with a working title of Little Monsters, will be completed in the coming weeks and at the moment it is scheduled to be broadcast on the Orange 3D channel in France simultaneously with Arte in February.

"ORF does not currently broadcast in 3D and there is no date when a 3D channel could be inaugurated but ORF is looking very closely at 3D. We're gaining our own production experience and it remains to be seen whether there will be a dedicated channel."
