Phillips also discusses why he left Dexter and outlines how this led to two-year overall deal with Lionsgate Television. He also reflects on the benefits of the US writers’ room model.

“It was a challenge every week to get the audience involved and keep them involved, to get them to love this man that does awful things, because Dexter Morgan is a psychopath,” Phillips said.

“I tend to have fairly large writing rooms, I think the writing room includes eight people. We arc out what the year is going to be about then pitch it to the networks, address their notes and talk about them and then we go back and start breaking episodes.”
