TALKING SHOP: Taco Ketelaar, senior VP of primetime entertainment at Sat.1, discusses his recent appointment at ProSiebenSat.1’s flagship channel in Germany and first acquisition – Talpa reality format Utopia.

C21's Talking Shop is a daily strand on C21Media.net that goes behind the news to talk to leading players in the international content business.

Ketelaar was the creative force behind Fear Factor for Endemol, went on to cofound Who Wants to be a Millionaire? buyer 2waytraffic and was CEO of BlazHoffski, seeing through its takeover by Warner Bros.

He took up his current post at Sat.1 in February, and last month at MipTV came news of the Utopia pick-up – an audacious first statement of his intent.

“We’re a very strong channel but it’s also time to move up a little bit and I’m a very strong believer of the format,” says Ketelaar of Talpa’s 24-hour yearlong reality format. “I said internally ‘I think this is a real game-changer and we would be foolish not to do it.’”

Ketelaar discusses making the transition to channel commissioner and what other areas of the Sat.1 schedule he’s looking to develop.
