With the BBC gearing up for charter renewal in 2016, having already taken on the £700m (US$1.1bn) burden of covering TV licences for over-75s, director of television Danny Cohen welcomed culture secretary John Whittingdale’s conciliatory tone at Edinburgh.

However, inconsistencies in the minister’s position on several occasions mean concern remains among the corporation’s supporters that the government really does wish to dismantle a British institution whose name is known and respected the world over.
