In this episode of Talking Shop, the MD of Big Light Productions in the UK addresses why cable is leaving broadcast behind and how the American showrunner model could be under threat from emerging digital platforms.

Spotnitz says: "Broadcast networks are trying to figure out how to have their cake and eat it too.

"They are wondering how to appeal to a giant audience but also make creatively interesting content, as what is happening on cable."

“They are one of the great strengths of the American TV system but now you don't need to follow the traditional showrunner model.

"You can have directors come and take charge of a show and make it as if it was long one film. I don't necessarily think that’s better in every instance, but it’s an alternative way of doing things and I have no problem with that."
