SBS lands Unplanned America

Public broadcaster SBS has acquired Australian and international sales rights to a six-part documentary that follows three nationals on a road trip through the US.

Unplanned America sees former MTV Australia staffers Tim ‘Gonzo’ Ryan and Pawel ‘Parv’ Jarecki and their pal Nick Maher, a self-taught filmmaker, drive 35,000 km across more than 35 states to investigate various subcultures.

They explored the LA porn scene and New York’s gay underground ballroom circuit, hung out with Chicago’s underground rappers and real-life superheroes in Seattle, and spent time with drifters in the California desert.

The series was self-financed and topped up with money from crowd-funding website Pozible to complete the production. SBS International will handle distribution of the show.

Together with Dan Mansour and Emma Smith, the trio has formed prodco No Roles For Sam to focus on documentary content.

The series premieres on SBS2 on May 12. Tying in with the launch, SBS Online has commissioned an online video game adapted from the boys’ adventures. The three-level retro platform game is being developed by Bitrave and will be available on the SBS website soon.

The trio’s first production, The Final Word, a documentary in which four terminally ill Australians from vastly different backgrounds reflect on their lives, aired on pubcaster ABC2 last December.
