RTL Fiction exec joins Drama Summit

CONTENT LONDON: RTL drama chief and Deutschland 83 commissioner Phillipp Steffens has joined the line-up for C21’s International Drama Summit.

Steffens has been head of fiction at the German broadcaster since March 2014 and has been responsible for productions including the critically acclaimed Deutschland 83, the highest-rated subtitled programme in television history in the UK, as well as Starfighter, Der Lehrer and Duell der Bruder.

Steffens will join a panel at the International Drama Summit at a time of high demand for big-budget German drama, with recent productions including Babylon Berlin, Ku’damm ’56, The Same Sky and The House.

Steffens’ former roles include founder of production company Greensky Films, with which he produced the international coproduction 8 with renowned film directors such as Gus Van Sant, Jane Campion, Wim Wenders and many others. The film won the Cinema for Peace Award in 2009 and was shown at festivals around the world.

Steffens then started Twenty Four 9 Films and produced international cinema coproductions and series including the TNT production Weinberg, for which he received a Grimme Award in 2016.

The RTL exec is the latest drama chief to be announced as a speaker for the 2016 Summit. You can find other announced speakers here.

The International Drama Summit, part of C21’s Content London, takes place at Picturehouse Central in London’s West End between November 29 and December 1, with the venue opening for registration and the opening night party on November 28.
