RTL CBS Extreme HD, which turns two next spring, has already been “beefed up” this season with a number of new titles, says Jennifer Batty, exec VP of programming at RTL CBS Asia Entertainment Network.

The latest high-profile addition to the schedule includes new mixed martial arts action-drama Kingdom, starring Nick Jonas, with its second season airing on Thursdays at 22.00. Also joining the line-up is The Player, starring Wesley Snipes, which has just started showing on Tuesdays at 22.00.

More new shows are due in early 2016, including Fail Army, Extreme Escapes, Wimp to Warrior and the new Bear Grylls series Mission Survive.

RTL CBS Extreme HD launched in March 2014, the second of two pay channels rolled out across Asia Pacific under the joint venture partnership between European media giant RTL Group and CBS Studios International, following the arrival of family-oriented entertainment RTL CBS Entertainment in September 2013.

The two complementary channels are now present in 18 counties across Asia Pacific, led by exclusive and day-and-date or express broadcasting and a 360º strategy offering content across all platforms for viewers to watch whenever and however they want.

RTL CBS Extreme HD’s factual line-up is kept fairly close to the channel’s name, explains Engwall, focusing on action series, extreme documentaries, extreme sport, reality and magic shows, “so that everything we have is action, fun and fast-paced,” says RTL CBS Asia Entertainment Network CEO Jonas Engwall.

Engwall adds that, alongside big-ticket shows like Kingdom and The Player, the channel’s extreme documentary and reality strands need filling. These can be in the form of extreme weather documentaries or shows like UK doc Don’t Look Down, which follows “young guys climbing up structures with no harnesses, challenging fate, so to speak, which makes for great TV.”

Extreme sports feature regularly on the channel. “It’s not about one single sport, but the ‘wow’ factor, which could be skydiving or motocross, or extreme surfing or something,” says Engwall. “We have fairly cool shows like Extreme Collection and Cliptomaniacs, which give you a pick of the coolest things around. It makes a lot of sense because showing only, say, skydiving would be niche taste.

“The key thing is that it fits the channel,” he says. “We won’t rule it out in terms of volume or hours; sometimes it makes sense to buy a one-off. That’s also fine.”
