RTÉ hires Acorn’s Murphy for scripted

Irish pubcaster RTÉ has appointed the MD of Acorn Media Enterprises (AME) as group head of drama and comedy.

Shane Murphy

Shane Murphy has been at AME since 2015, where he has led the commissioning, development and coproduction of dramas including Agatha Raisin in partnership with broadcasters such as ITV, Sky and the BBC in the UK.

At RTÉ, Murphy will be responsible for developing and delivering drama and scripted comedy across its platforms with a particular focus on growing youth audiences.

He will also oversee the development of new Irish writing, performing and production talent in partnership with the Irish independent production sector.

RTÉ director of content, Jim Jennings, said: “Shane brings a wealth of knowledge of all aspects of production along with extensive international experience, which will enable RTÉ to build on its success in drama and comedy and to develop and nurture Irish creative talent.”

Murphy added: “While I’m genuinely sad to be leaving the uniquely creative and dynamic Acorn Media, I could not turn down the opportunity to work across scripted shows in my native public service broadcaster.

“I’m very much looking forward to taking on this exciting new role and working with teams across RTÉ and with the Irish independent sector to further develop RTÉ drama and comedy.”

Earlier this year AME again partnered with RTÉ on forthcoming comedy Finding Joy.

The Irish broadcaster revamped its structure recently as it looks to streamline its activities into three divisions, working across TV, radio and online respectively.
