Finnish game developer Rovio is considering turning Amazing Alex, the successor to its hugely popular Angry Birds app, into a cartoon for TV.

The Amazing Alex app was released yesterday and comes after Angry Birds spawned a franchise that has had over 900 million downloads across all platforms and is now being made [1] into a cartoon for TV.

Rovio’s head of animation Nick Dorra told C21 the company’s animators had already produced an Amazing Alex trailer that accompanied its launch.

The puzzle game, based on an app Rovio acquired called Casey’s Contraptions, challenges players to create chain reactions from objects scattered around Alex’s house.

Discussing multi-platform possibilities for the app, Dorra said: “We have to see how the game performs, because Amazing Alex is something completely different from what we’ve been doing for the last couple of years.”

“If enough people connect with Alex, however, we would be hitting the ground running,” he added.

Rovio is itself financing the production of the Angry Birds (52×3′) animation series, which is due to air this fall, and is producing it via its in-house production unit.

Dorra said no broadcasters were currently attached to the project, but deals with a number of channels and partners worldwide were “close”.

Meanwhile, it was announced [2] yesterday that Rovio would be bringing Angry Birds to connected televisions for the first time, through a native app for Samsung smart TVs.
