Smith will be responsible for overseeing the UK indie’s slate of comedy and managing projects in the UK and the US, following the signing of the company’s first-look deal with HBO last year.

His credits include producing sitcoms such as Trollied on Sky1 and the channel’s new family sitcom Carters Get Rich.

Smith, who joined Roughcut as a producer  five years ago, started his career as a script editor on dramas including The Bill and Waterloo Road, later becoming development producer for Bentley Productions.

He takes the role previously held by Dan Hines, who was appointed as Roughcut’s head of comedy in 2012. Hines exec produced BBC3 comedy Cuckoo earlier this year but his future is unclear.

Ash Atalla, MD of Roughcut TV, said: “Alex has one of the smartest script minds I’ve worked with so there was no question that he would become Roughcut’s new head of comedy. He will lead our development and production teams as we continue to grow our UK and international business.”
