Robot Wars returns to action on BBC2 this month

A German broadcaster has acquired the rebooted version of BBC2 series Robot Wars, which is due to premiere in the UK this month.

ProSiebenSat.1 TV Deutschland in Germany will air the 6×60′ series, which follows a national knock-out competition to find the toughest, most advanced fighting robots in the country.

Irish broadcasters Dara O’Briain and Angela Scanlon will host the BBC2 series, with Jonathan Pearce returning to commentate on the fights.

The new episodes are produced by Tinopolis Group-owned Mentorn Scotland in association with SJP Media and are due to begin airing on July 24 after a 12-year absence from UK television.

Passion Distribution holds series and format rights to the show and secured the deal with the German free TV station.

Meanwhile, Manoto TV has picked up the free TV rights to the series for Farsi/Persian speakers in Iran and Passion revealed it is in discussions about the series in territories worldwide.

“Robot Wars’ mix of entertainment, technology and tough competition has all the right ingredients for the German audience and will doubtless appeal across the generations,” said Elin Thomas, director of global sales at Passion Distribution.
