Rising Star shines in Portugal

A Portuguese broadcaster has become the latest channel to pick up hit Israeli format Rising Star, which has also been in Brazil, Spain and the UK in the past week.

TVI in Portugal will air the format next year after striking a deal with the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group.

The interactive talent show was originally produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting’s Channel 2 and premiered in September, drawing a 46% audience share.

The show allows viewers to vote on the efforts of singers in real time as they perform behind a screen, giving them immediate feedback. If the performer secures 70% of the viewers’ and judges’ votes, the screen rises and the performer is revealed.

“This format is in line with our innovation strategy. TVI is permanently looking for the best and most promising entertainment formats and Rising Star is clearly one step ahead of what is being done with talent shows worldwide,” said Bruno Santos, head of local programming at TVI.

The format has already been picked up by ITV in the UK, as well as by broadcasters in Spain, Hungary, Germany, France, Italy, Scandinavia, the US, Russia and, most recently, Brazil.
