Rare Day hires ex-Discovery boss

Rare Day, the UK indie set up by former Channel 4 documentaries head Peter Dale, has appointed the former exec VP and MD of Discovery Networks UK as its new MD.

Dan Brooke (left), who left Discovery Networks UK in January after four years, will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Rare Day business, working alongside Dale to grow the prodco's commissions and open doors to work with brands and distributors.

During Brooke's tenure, Discovery's portfolio of channels expanded, with the launches of the Discovery HD, Discovery Knowledge, ID, Discovery Turbo and Discovery Shed. He also worked on the development of the company's recently launched Freeview channel, Quest.

In addition to the appointment, cross-platform factual producer Emily Renshaw-Smith has been appointed head of development and production. She joins Rare Day from her role as director of content at Current TV, where she led the commissioning and in-house production teams.

"Dan's appointment to this key role is an exciting step forward for the company. I've always admired his keen and passionate eye for popular content and his commercial nous," Dale said.

"He's got a great track record and exactly the kind of experience to enable us to build new relationships and create new ideas. His understanding of today's media means, like me, he's ambitious to develop new sources of funding, new means of distribution and new alliances – key ingredients for the company's success.

"Dan and Emily's appointments not only enhance the company profile but will undoubtedly expand our portfolio to ensure we are in a great position to make the most of what's coming down the tracks."

Dale left Channel 4 to set up Rare Day last December. The company is currently producing School of Saatchi, a 4x60' talent show that began airing this week for UK pubcaster BBC2, in association with Princess Productions.
